The 2025 Medicare Enrollment Period is Now Over: What Comes Next?

Rectangle 1 (22)

The annual Medicare Enrollment Period (AEP) for 2025 has officially come to a close. If you recently reviewed or made changes to your Medicare plan during this time, you might be wondering—what happens next? Whether this was your first time navigating Medicare or you’ve been through the process before, it’s important to know what to expect now that the enrollment window has closed. As your trusted agent, I’m here to walk you through the next steps, answer any lingering questions, and ensure you’re set up for success in the coming year.

What Happens After the Annual Enrollment Period Ends?

Your New Plan Takes Effect on January 1st
Any changes you made to your Medicare plan during AEP will take effect starting January 1, 2025. Whether you switched your Medicare Advantage Plan, adjusted your Prescription Drug Plan, or returned to Original Medicare, those updates will officially kick in with the new year.

If you didn’t make changes, don’t worry—your current plan will automatically renew. However, I always recommend reviewing your plan annually to make sure you’re not missing out on better options.

Review Your Plan Details
Once you receive your new plan materials, including your ID cards and Evidence of Coverage, take the time to carefully review the details. Here’s what I encourage you to check:

  • Premiums, Copays, and Deductibles: Make sure you understand the costs associated with your plan for 2025.
  • Prescription Drug Coverage: Double-check that your medications are still covered under your Part D or Medicare plan at the most affordable tiers.
  • Provider Networks: If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, confirm that your doctors, hospitals, and specialists are still in the network.

If anything seems unclear, reach out to me—I’m always happy to go over your plan’s details with you.

What If You Missed the Annual Enrollment Period?

If you didn’t make changes during AEP, you might still have options depending on your situation:

  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1–March 31): During this time, if you already have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can make a one-time change. This could include switching to a different Advantage plan or going back to Original Medicare and enrolling in a standalone Part D plan.
  • Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Life happens, and sometimes certain circumstances allow you to make changes outside of the standard enrollment windows. Events like moving to a new service area, having delayed changes due to a Federal disaster, losing other health coverage, or experiencing changes in your Medicaid eligibility may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. If you think this applies to you, let me know, and I’ll help you determine your eligibility.

Plan for the Year Ahead
Now that you’ve secured your coverage for 2025, the next step is to plan ahead so you can make the most of your benefits. Here are a few tips I always share with my clients:

  • Schedule Your Preventive Screenings and Appointments: Most Medicare plans cover preventive care services at little or no cost. Annual wellness visits, screenings, and vaccines are great ways to prioritize your health.
  • Review Your Prescriptions Quarterly: If your prescriptions or dosages change during the year, let’s review your drug plan to see what co-pays and other expenses are relative to the changes.
  • Stay Informed: Medicare can feel overwhelming at times, but I’m always here to help. Whether you have questions about coverage, billing, or benefits, don’t hesitate to reach out to me throughout the year.

Let Me Be Your Medicare Resource Year-Round

My job isn’t just to help you enroll during the Annual Enrollment Period—I’m here all year long to answer your questions, provide support, and ensure you feel confident in your coverage.

Here are a few ways I can continue to help you:

  • Clarifying Your Benefits: If you’re unsure about what your plan covers, I’ll break it down for you.
  • Checking Provider Networks: I can confirm whether your doctors, specialists, and hospitals are covered.
  • Exploring Special Enrollment Periods: If life changes affect your coverage, I’ll help you navigate your options.
  • Preparing for Next Year’s Enrollment: By staying in touch, we can ensure you’re ready to make informed choices next time AEP rolls around.
